We did it again! NorthWind passed the Control System Integrators Association (CSIA) re-certification process for the third time this summer. This achievement means that NorthWind has been officially recognized (again) as a CSIA Certified Control System Integrator, the highest level of certification in the controls industry.
CSIA Certification is considered to be the “gold-seal” of a professionally managed control system integration business. It requires that a business demonstrate the use of professional practices that ensure stability and sustainability, and that it proves itself to be technically proficient and able to meet the needs of its customers, both present and future.
Becoming and remaining certified has been no small task. It has required that NorthWind meet very stringent standards of quality and demonstrate that it follows business practices. These practices are thoroughly evaluated not just once, but every three years, to remain certified. Specifically, this entails passing a list of 79 different Audit Criteria that address characteristics of the company ranging from general management and customer service/support, all the way to human resources and financial management.
Passing the re-certification process this past summer required that records be pulled, procedures be documented, and a thick notebook of supporting data be compiled. Beth, our very capable Administrative Assistant, spent many hours organizing data, printing reports and making sure that everyone in the company stayed on schedule with the shared task of compiling the necessary information, then putting it all together so it made sense. Our hats are off to her for a job well done!
NorthWind first became CSIA Certified in 2010, and has since undergone re-certification in 2013 and again this year. Since 2010, the company has seen many changes including a 4-fold increase in staff, two additions to our building and a major business expansion into international markets. As you can imagine, things have been on a pretty fast pace around here and changes like these have impacted how things are done on a day-to-day basis. During this period of growth, we have found that utilizing the CSIA Best Business Practices, along with a strong tradition of annual business planning and record-keeping along the way, has helped NorthWind become stronger and better overall.
It is exciting to be part of a small company like ours that has an industrious history, a young staff and so much potential for the future. Seeing the opportunities a growing company provides for young people fresh out of college and the positive impact it has on our local community is very satisfying. We are fortunate to have a good business model and high standards to aspire to, making our company a good place to work and a company that really works.
For now it’s a good feeling to have our third re-certification in the rearview mirror. But we have to stay vigilant and always strive to improve; we’ll need to be ready for the next CSIA re-certification round a short 3 years from now! I can hear Beth groaning already!
